Respite Care

What it is

Respite can be provided by a personal care agency at home, an adult day program, or an assisted living or nursing community that takes short stays.

Caregivers who take regular breaks can keep caring longer. Plan respite before a crisis, not only during one.

Good to know

  • Utah’s Area Agencies on Aging run caregiver support programs that can help with respite costs.
  • People on Medicare hospice can get up to five days of inpatient respite at a time, arranged by the hospice.
  • The VA offers respite care to eligible veterans, up to 30 days a year.
  • Assisted living short stays usually need a recent health assessment and TB test before move-in.
In an emergency, call 911. For a mental health or substance use crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), any time.
