Medical Equipment

What it is

Durable medical equipment (DME) is equipment that lasts and is used at home for a medical reason. Suppliers deliver and set it up, and many service it.

Hospice patients usually get equipment related to their diagnosis through the hospice at no cost.

Good to know

  • Medicare Part B covers medically necessary DME ordered by a doctor; after the deductible you usually pay 20% of the approved amount.
  • Use a supplier enrolled in Medicare, and ask whether they accept assignment.
  • Utah Medicaid and most private plans cover DME with a prescription and sometimes prior approval.
In an emergency, call 911. For a mental health or substance use crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), any time.
